Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of sacred spaces within the context of power and culture through a comparative study between Hagia Sophia in Turkey and Sultan Ternate Mosque in Indonesia. Employing a theoretical and conceptual approach based on literature and historical documents, this research examines the political influence on architectural transformation, symbolic meanings in power transitions, local cultural adaptation practices, and meaning negotiation within community contexts. Findings reveal that Hagia Sophia represents a substitutive-confrontational transformation model driven by identity politics agenda, while Sultan Ternate Mosque demonstrates an accumulative-consensual model that is organic and participatory. These differences reflect the influence of socio-political contexts and cultural traditions in shaping sacred space transformation patterns. This research contributes to theoretical understanding of the relationship between space, power, and culture, while providing practical implications for cultural heritage and sacred space management in plural societies.
