Abstract

Inclusive design considers human diversity, including various types of hearing limitations. There are three types of hearing limitations according to inclusive design, namely temporary, situational, and permanent. Brawijaya University is one of the universities that accepts students with disabilities. Brawijaya University currently has 240 students with disabilities, with 95 of them (42.1%) being active students. Accessibility in education remains a significant challenge, particularly for students with hearing impairments. With the development of video-based learning, it is important to evaluate how accessibility features such as caption, transcript and sign language affect the effectiveness and efficiency of the learning process for students with hearing impairment. The research shows that the implementation of caption, transcript, and sign language features significantly improves the effectiveness and efficiency of learning. The average task success rate reached 95% according to the effectiveness measure standard of “Highly Effective”, showing the effectiveness of accessibility features in supporting learning. Task completion time was in the category of “Fast,” and pretest-posttest analysis showed significant cognitive improvement after the use of accessibility features. Interviews revealed that combining all three features provided the most benefit in understanding the material, despite some challenges such as divided focus. Accessibility features such as caption, transcript, and sign language greatly contribute to improving the effectiveness and efficiency of learning for students with hearing impairments.
