Abstract

The e-commerce industry is expanding quickly worldwide, with the fastest growth seen in Global South countries. This paper reviews recent development of e-commerce platforms in emerging markets: the paper first defines e-commerce platforms broadly and summarizes its various characteristics; then, it identifies the unique opportunities and challenges faced by e-commerce platforms in Global South countries and major trends in selected countries; lastly, the paper briefly discusses two specific examples of e-commerce companies in the Global South and their business model formation processes in relation to Amazon.
