Abstract

Digital technology serves as a pivotal bridge for manufacturing enterprises to achieve servitization upgrades; however, this process is contingent upon internal capabilities and external environmental factors. Using a dataset of 139 Chinese A-share listed pharmaceutical firms from 2014 to 2024, this study investigates the mechanism linking digital transformation to servitization performance through the lens of the corporate lifecycle. The results demonstrate that digital transformation significantly enhances both input and output servitization performance, with these effects being most pronounced in mature enterprises. Mechanism tests reveal that digital transformation facilitates servitization by bolstering innovation capability, absorptive capacity, and overall dynamic capability. Conversely, environmental uncertainty exerts a significant negative moderating effect on the relationship between digital transformation and servitization performance. Further heterogeneity analysis indicates that the promotional impact is stronger for firms located in the eastern region and large-scale enterprises compared to those in central or western regions and small and medium-sized enterprises. These findings offer theoretical contributions and practical guidance for manufacturing firms seeking to align digital strategies with service-oriented transformation.
