Abstract

The rapid integration of social media into education has redefined how undergraduate students acquire digital literacy skills in the 21st century. This study investigates the use of social media for digital literacy awareness among undergraduates through a comparative analysis of Don Bosco College Tura and Durama College Tura. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected from 120 respondents (60 from each college) via a structured Google Form questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS, Excel, and Julius statistical tools to identify patterns of social media use, awareness levels, and influencing factors. Findings reveal that while Durama College students (85%) primarily used social media for less than two hours daily, Don Bosco College students (35%) reported longer engagement, indicating differing levels of digital activeness. Durama students showed greater awareness of privacy, cybersecurity, and ethical digital practices, whereas Don Bosco students demonstrated higher frequency of use but lower critical engagement. The study also found that faculty encouragement, resource availability, and infrastructure significantly influence digital literacy outcomes. Trust in social media information remained moderate, highlighting the need for critical evaluation and digital ethics training. The research concludes that structured institutional support, curriculum integration, and faculty involvement are essential to transform social media into an effective educational tool for fostering digital literacy among undergraduates.
