Abstract

This study explores how non-interactive animation—specifically 2D and 3D animated content—can support communication development in children with Down Syndrome, particularly those aged 3 to 8. Drawing on a central case study by Jeetha and Prasad (2024), which assessed the effectiveness of animation in enhancing engagement and functional learning among children with special needs, this research investigates how animated content can foster visual learning, attention span, and expressive abilities. The case study is examined alongside relevant secondary literature and educational theories to build a well-rounded understanding of animation’s pedagogical value. The study employs a triangulated approach: (1) analytical review of Jeetha and Prasad’s case study, (2) comparison with existing literature, and (3) theoretical analysis using Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, Bandura’s Social Learning Theory, and Vygotsky’s Constructivist Theory. Findings suggest that animation facilitates not only cognitive and motor-skill acquisition but also socio-emotional growth through immersive visual engagement. While the non-interactive format of traditional animation demonstrates strong potential, the paper highlights the added value of integrating interactive features for deeper learning and sustained communication development. This research affirms animation as a promising, inclusive tool in special needs education—particularly when content is developmentally tailored and supported by interactive design strategies.
