Abstract

The Borobudur Temple has thousands of narrative and decorative reliefs. However, reading and understanding the stories and scenes in the relief panels is challenging. This artistic research using practice-led research methodology investigates the interpretation of 2D+ reliefs to a three-dimensional storytelling perspective. The purpose of this study is to find a method of interpreting three-dimensional storytelling perspectives, produce 3D dioramas, and explain the aesthetic experience of comparing four models of relief storytelling visualization. This article focuses on describing the respondents’ aesthetic experiences using the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) data collection technique. The researchers found that three-dimensional perspective storytelling is easier to understand, both the assets and scenes in the stories of the tested reliefs. In conclusion, the virtualization of the Borobudur temple reliefs in this three-dimensional perspective interpretation contributes to a more realistic sensation and perception and further enhances the understanding of the storytelling of the scenes in the reliefs.
