- Abstract
Existing literature analyzed the causal effects of various Chinese environmental policies on regional economics and other social factors. For instance, low-carbon city pilot policy, environmental protection tax law, and green credit policy. However, there are some limitations regarding earlier research. First, the selection of policies is limited. Second, the selection of economic indicators is usually restricted to macroeconomic variables like industrial output or GDP, which might not account for the effects of different sectors. Third, many studies use structural equation modeling, which overlooks the counterfactual effects. To address these gaps, this study employs the synthetic control method to estimate the effect of a Chinese environmental policy, the “Opinions on Comprehensively Strengthening Ecological and Environmental Protection and Resolutely Fighting the Battle Against Pollution (2018),” on investment in urban environmental infrastructure.
