Abstract

Promoting high-quality economic development ( Hqed ) is a current research hotspot in the field of economic development. Based on panel data from 30 Chinese provinces spanning 2005–2023, this paper constructs evaluation indicator systems for technological innovation ( TI ) and Hqed , employing the Entropy Weight-TOPSIS method for comprehensive measurement. Baseline regression and mediation effect models are established to explore the impact of TI on Hqed and its transmission mechanisms. The study finds that: TI has a significant positive promotional effect on Hqed , and this conclusion demonstrates strong robustness. The mediation effect analysis indicates that TI can ameliorate the misallocation of innovation resources, R&D capital, and R&D human resources, thereby fostering industrial agglomeration to promote Hqed . The heterogeneity analysis reveals that the promotional effect of TI on Hqed ranks as follows: Western > Central > Eastern region, exhibiting a clear diminishing marginal effect. This suggests that the Western region can leverage technological innovation to achieve “leapfrog development” and catch up with the Central and Eastern regions.
