The Determinants of Food Security and Poverty Rates in Indonesia

Abstract

This study investigated food security and the severity of poverty, as well as the factors that influenced them. The purpose of this study was to determine (1) the impact of agricultural land, health, population, and education on food security; and (2) the impact of health, population, education, and per capita income on the severity of poverty in Indonesia. The methodology used was quantitative-associative method. The data panel was chosen in this study taken from 34 Indonesian provinces from 2011 to 2021. The ILS method was applied in conjunction with a simultaneous panel regression model analysis tool in this study. According to the study’s findings, (1) agricultural land has a positive and significant effect on food security in Indonesia; (2) health has a positive and significant effect on food security in Indonesia; (3) population has a negative and significant effect on food security in Indonesia; (4) education has a negative and insignificant effect on food security in Indonesia; (5) health has a positive and significant effect on the severity of poverty in Indonesia; (6) population size has a positive and significant effect on the severity of poverty in Indonesia; (7) education has a negative and insignificant effect on the severity of poverty in Indonesia; (8) per capita income has a negative and significant effect on the severity of poverty in Indonesia; (9) food security is negative and insignificant to the severity of poverty in Indonesia; (10) the severity of poverty has a positive and significant effect on food security in Indonesia.
