- Abstract
In the preliminary design of single piers, piled foundations, and piled raft foundations, it is often desirable to adopt a simplified approach for the estimation of foundation displacement, rather than immediately resorting to detailed numerical analyses (2D or 3D). Some research has been undertaken on the use of the equivalent pier method for estimating the settlement of a pile group subjected to vertical loading, but there is only limited research was conducted on the application of this method for lateral and moment loadings.
This paper presents the development of an equivalent pier approach on pile groups and piled rafts subjected to lateral and moment loadings. Finite element analyses using RS3 and Plaxis 3D were used to obtain the deflection and rotation of a pier within a two-layer elastic ground profile, for different ratios of pier length to equivalent pier diameter (L/D ratio). These results are presented in terms of simplified expressions for a pier within a uniform soil layer, with modification factors applied to account for a soil stratum of different stiffness below the base of the pier. The results have the potential to provide a quick check on more complex numerical analyses of piers and pile groups subjected to lateral loads.
