Abstract

The digital transformation in higher education has seen the rise of AI tools, which are popular among teachers and students. While research has primarily focused on student perceptions, less attention has been given to teachers’ perspectives, particularly in Africa. Understanding these perceptions is crucial for the effective implementation of AI in education. This study explores teachers’ opinions on using AI in a university setting. A case study was conducted at Botho University in Lesotho, targeting lecturers familiar with or using AI for educational purposes through convenience sampling. Guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires and interviews, analysed with NVivo 11 software, focusing on perceptions of usefulness, ease of use, attitudes, and intentions regarding AI. Educators view AI as valuable for lesson planning and assessment, but express concerns about potential misuse and its impact on critical thinking. While acknowledging its benefits, challenges like overreliance and generic responses remain. Clear guidelines could improve its educational integration. Educators are generally open to using AI for lesson planning, but the lack of clear policies leads to uncertainty. Effective integration necessitates clear policies and training for optimal use in teaching and learning.
