- Abstract
This study examines 41,944 food delivery orders from major Indian cities using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression to determine the factors influencing delivery times. Key findings are as follows: (1) Distance has nonlinear effects—delivery time increases by 11.01 minutes when the distance surpasses 5 km. Traffic congestion and adverse weather conditions significantly affect delivery efficiency. Interestingly, not all peak hours result in delays: foggy mornings during the morning rush hour reduce delivery time by 5 minutes, whereas the evening rush hour under similar conditions prolongs it by 2.75 minutes. (2) The interaction terms uncover a counterintuitive trend: older riders exhibit enhanced task efficiency, decreasing delivery time per order by 0.06 minutes. Electric scooters particularly outperform in harsh weather—cutting delivery time by 1.46 minutes during sandstorms. The study suggests a tripartite collaborative decision-making framework that includes platforms, governments, and society to optimize resource allocation. It recommends restructuring platform dispatch mechanisms to create new avenues for optimizing resource distribution in instant logistics and emergency delivery scenarios.
