Abstract

The dynamic nature and sudden occurrence in loose, saturated soil deposition make liquefaction the major damage catalyst during an earthquake. Areas liquefied in the built-up areas suffer significantly, and there is substantial evidence of such occurrence since the term liquefaction coins [7]. Being an active seismic region and the major port city of Bangladesh, Chattogram lies under major threat of liquefaction induced hazard as the city develops on low-plastic fine soils having considerable fine sand contents. Thirty-four borehole data have been utilized to prepare a liquefaction hazard map over the built-up area of Chattogram City. However, the water level has been seen fluctuating depending on weather and tidal conditions; hence, it has significant effects on liquefaction-induced hazards. Besides that, the magnitude of the earthquake can alter the damage scenario. Summing up all of this, this research aims to conduct a sensitivity analysis to examine the effects of water table and seismic magnitude on probable liquefaction hazards in the city center. Although no previous datasets have been reported for liquefaction hazards, implicit measurements clearly agree with the overall susceptibility condition. In a nutshell, this research provides an overview of the conditions of liquefaction hazards that can guide the city planner and policymaker in effective mitigation and future development.
