Abstract

This research was motivated by preliminary findings on undergraduate students (class of 2016) at Universitas Negeri Padang, which revealed that students’ character development generally fell into the “undeveloped” category. Furthermore, there was a mismatch between institutional policies and the actual implementation of character education. This discrepancy is attributed to the lack of consistency in applying character values through real-life practices. Therefore, there is a need for a character development program that fosters sustainable character behavior. The research aims to: (1) analyze the aspects required to develop students’ character, and (2) design a valid, practical, and effective Real-Life Story (RELIST) counseling model for character development. This study employed a research and development (R&D) design using the ADDIE model, which consists of five stages: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. Based on the needs assessment, a model framework was developed, resulting in a prototype that underwent expert validation, limited group testing, and iterative evaluation at each stage. Data were collected through questionnaires and observations, then analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study produced three main products: a model hand-book, a counselor’s practical guide, and the Student Character Activity Sheet (Lembar Aktivitas Karakter Mahasiswa/LAKM). These products were validated by experts in terms of content, format, and structure, and were deemed suitable for implementation. Effectiveness testing further indicated that the RELIST counseling model significantly improved students’ character development. In conclusion, the RELIST counseling model is valid, practical, and effective, and is thus considered appropriate for use in higher education counseling practices.
