Abstract

Urban transportation agencies face challenges in the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure. This conceptual paper aims to explore the potential of innovative technologies in transforming urban transportation systems in Ghana, with a focus on sustainable facility management (FM) practices in cities. The study adopts a conceptual approach, incorporating global best practices and case studies from Singapore and Sweden. A semi-systematic literature review is employed to evaluate the potential of innovative technologies, including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), electric vehicles (EVs), and Mobility as a Service (MaaS), in enhancing urban transport systems. The study identifies significant potential for smart technologies to improve urban transportation in Ghana, including enhanced traffic management, reduced congestion, and environmental benefits through the adoption of electric vehicles. However, it also highlights key barriers such as limited funding, outdated infrastructure, and lack of public awareness, which hinder the adoption of these technologies. Practical solutions, including public-private partnerships, policy reforms, and public education campaigns, are proposed to overcome these challenges. This paper offers a unique perspective on the integration of innovative technologies into Ghana’s urban transportation systems, emphasising the role of facility management practices in achieving sustainability and efficiency through pioneering work. It aligns with the following SDGs: SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).
