- Abstract
Calocybe indica is a popular species of mushroom cultivated commercially for it numerous nutritive and medicinal values. This study was undertaken to determine the suitable agro-waste substrate with cocopeat or loamy soil casing material combinations for optimal growth of the mushroom. Bags of each substrate were prepared, sterilized and then inoculated with spawn of C. indica species. First flush fruiting bodies were harvested and measurements taken. The yield and biological efficiency were estimated. The number of fruiting bodies observed during the study were in the range of 10 to 43. Where both the lowest and highest number of fruiting bodies were observed on cassava peels as substrate. Yield of mushroom observed were in the range 101 g and 519 g. The lowest yield observed on cassava peels with cocopeat and the highest yield on corn cobs with cocopeat. Estimated biological efficiency were in the range of 16.83% and 111.33%. Rice straw with loamy soil achieved 106.5% biological efficiency, outperforming cassava peels by about 15.6%. The lowest percentage for cassava peels with cocopeat and the highest percentage on rice straw with loamy soil. The findings clearly demonstrate that rice straw was the most effective substrate for enhancing all measured quality parameters. However, corn cobs showed high profitability and can be substituted for rice straw. No statistically significant difference was however observed in growth parameters with the loamy soil or cocopeat casing materials. Mushroom farming using agricultural waste is ecofriendly and sustainable with positive impact on the environment.
