- Abstract
The growing internationalization of the Indonesian language has increased the demand for qualified Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) teachers, making their professional development a strategic priority in the global era. This study aims to analyze the competency standards required for BIPA teachers and identify the major challenges affecting their professional development. A qualitative approach employing document analysis was used to examine BIPA teacher competency standards, policy documents, and relevant scholarly literature. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that BIPA teacher professionalism encompasses not only pedagogical, professional, personal, and social competencies but also intercultural competence, digital competence, instructional material development, and continuous professional learning. Furthermore, the study identifies four major challenges: disparities in teacher qualifications, limited opportunities for continuous professional development, increasing demands for digital competence, and the need to strengthen intercultural competence in multicultural learning environments. These findings highlight the importance of collaboration among government agencies, higher education institutions, and BIPA providers in strengthening professional development programs, developing adaptive curricula, and fostering sustainable professional networks. The study provides strategic recommendations for enhancing BIPA teacher professionalism to support the quality and sustainability of the internationalization of the Indonesian language.
