Abstract

This study is titled The Use of Emojis in WhatsApp Groups of the Makassar Tribe. The study aims to analyze the types of emojis, their functions, and the factors influencing emoji usage in WhatsApp groups of the Makassar tribe. The data collection method used the observation technique with note-taking and screenshotting techniques. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that the types of emojis commonly used in WhatsApp groups of the Makassar tribe are angry emojis, happy emojis, sad emojis, and surprised emojis. The functions of using emojis include reinforcing communication, reducing ambiguity, increasing communication efficiency, enhancing personal connection, conveying context and tone, and facilitating creativity and playing with language. The factors influencing the use of emojis in communication include biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors.
