Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic condition characterized by high blood sugar levels caused by reduced insulin production, reduced response to insulin, or both [1]. Many traditional plants can lower blood sugar levels, but their use is often based solely on experience without sufficient clinical research support [2]. One plant known to lower blood sugar is red ginger. Red ginger has advantages in safety, practicality, and better economic aspects compared to frequently used chemical drugs [3]. To find out that the extract of red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) on blood glucose levels and kidney histopathology in streptozotocin-induced, this study used laboratory experimental method with a research design of Post Test Only Control Group Design. In this study, there were 40 male rats divided into 6 groups, with a negative control group (rats induced CMC Na 0,5%), a positive control group (rats induced with glibenklamid 20 mg/kgBW), a treatment group of rats induced with extract of red ginger used two different solutions, ethanol and n-hexane with doses of 80 mg/kgBW, 100 mg/kgBW, and 200 mg/kgBW respectively. Conclusion : red ginger extract (Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum) had an significant effect on blood glucose level and show a effect of improvement in kidney structure.
