Abstract

While AI integration in language education gains momentum, understanding students’ lived experiences with AI-enhanced assessment remains limited, particularly in ESP contexts. This qualitative case study explored how business students experienced and made meaning of e-portfolio assessment integrated with Gemini AI in developing their English speaking performance. Employing case study design with thematic analysis, this research examined the experiences of nine second-semester students from three English for Business classes at Politeknik Negeri Bali. Three students from each class participated in semi-structured interviews about their 8-week learning journey. Data analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s six-phase thematic approach. Five themes emerged. First, AI as a Speaking Coach revealed students’ perception of Gemini AI as a patient practice partner, enabling unlimited speaking rehearsals without judgment. Second, Portfolio-Documented Progress captured how e-portfolios made speaking improvement tangible through recorded performances, helping students identify growth areas. Third, Feedback Immediacy and Application demonstrated how instant AI feedback accelerated speaking development through immediate practice adjustments. Fourth, Business Context Authenticity demonstrated how AI-generated business scenarios improved speaking relevance and facilitated the acquisition of professional vocabulary. Fifth, From Accuracy to Fluency illustrated students’ progression from focusing on grammatical correctness to developing natural business communication flow. The findings indicate that integrating e-portfolio assessment with AI support creates dynamic learning environments where continuous practice, immediate feedback, and progress documentation synergistically enhance speaking performance. This approach suggests innovative possibilities for ESP assessment that develop professional communication competence through technology-mediated practice and reflection, positioning AI as a transformative tool in vocational language education.
