Abstract

This article aims to criticize the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) policy by exploring the potential of Japan-Korea-China trilateral cooperation as a more inclusive and sustainable export market alternative for ASEAN countries. Using descriptive qualitative approach with document and literature analysis, this article is analyzed through the framework of Regional Security Complex Theory (RSCT), the concept of regional partnership and the principle of sustainable development. The results show that Japan-Korea-China trilateral cooperation can be an alternative trade in agricultural commodities for ASEAN countries because it tends to develop sustainable trade mechanisms that are more adaptive without repressive approaches such as EUDR. Such cooperation has the potential to provide new market shares, provide effectiveness in trade activities, strengthen Asia’s bargaining position in global forums, increase regional solidarity between East Asia and ASEAN, and create economic resilience as an integral part of regional security. This article contributes to finding solutions to trade barriers caused by EUDR, especially in the Asian region.
