Abstract

The Taliban had regained control of Afghanistan in mid-August 2021. Events taking place in Afghanistan have become headlines in Indonesia. The State Intelligence Agency (BIN) as part of the official Indonesian government agency engaged in intelligence has interest and concern for what is happening in Afghanistan. This situation directly or indirectly affects the state of defense and security of the Indonesian state. A statement by one of the top BIN officials about BIN’s infiltration into the Taliban has received coverage in several online media in Indonesia. This news is interesting to study because the news narration delivered by each online media reflects their views and standpoints on this event. The purpose of this research is to find out and understand news narratives from several online media in Indonesia. The online media studied consisted of tribunnews.com, detik.com, pikiran-rakyat.com, and okezone.com. This research is a qualitative research using narrative analysis. The concept used in this research consists of story and plot, Todorov’s narrative structure and Propp’s narrative character. The results of this study reveal that the online media tribunnews.com, detik.com, and okezone.com generally narrate the infiltration of BIN into the Taliban in order to maintain peace and the integrity of the Indonesian nation. Meanwhile, the online media narration, pikiran-rakyat.com criticized the mention of the word ‘infiltrate’ which has caused a polemic among the public and questioned the actions of BIN.
