Proceedings of the International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (IRES 2022)

Conference name: Proceedings of the International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (IRES 2022)
Date: 20-22 September 2022
Location: Düsseldorf, Germany (Hybrid)

This year has been marked by accelerating climate destabilization, global and regional security challenges, structural shifts in industry and the economy, and tighter policies in favour of renewable energy. Storage systems for rapid dispatch, sector coupling, systems integration, massive response and dramatic market shifts emerged to become more important than ever before.

The 2022 International Renewable Energy Storage (IRES) conference was framed in the broad theme of ‘decarbonized industries’, the new focus of the accompanying inaugural exposition. It brought together the innovative technologies and research from over 100 international experts. Political, legal, business, and research communities came together to exchange ideas in both physical and hybrid meeting formats.

EUROSOLAR’s IRES is one of the largest conferences in the field of peer-reviewed renewable energy storage research. Speakers and poster presenters shared their results in storage technologies, networks and systems, system analysis and planning, storage in distributed energy resources, storage in industry and industrial production and processes, storage opportunities specific to emerging countries, and storage cities: municipal energy supply and storages and storage reports as global case studies on energy storage.

Founded in 2006 with the World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE) and organized by EUROSOLAR e.V.—the European Association for Renewable Energy—IRES has become a central platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas in the field of renewable energy storage.

IRES was held in physical format again, with the opportunity of distant participation. Despite continued limitations, the 2022 event was once again able to present a wide range of new findings in the fields of batteries, thermal energy storage and power-to-gas, as well as solutions for storage in private households and industrial heat supply. In the hybrid format, participants were able to contribute without any restrictions. Researchers presented their results as peer-reviewed oral contributions or through live poster discussions.

We publish all IRES contributions that were accepted as judged fully qualified by the multiple evaluation process of the IRES Scientific Committee. Without the cooperation of our committee members, this timely and accountable open access publication of the IRES 2022 Proceedings would not have been possible.
