- Abstract
This chapter provides a structured analysis of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education by examining its conceptual foundations, principal applications, benefits, risks, and strategic conditions for sustainable adoption. It introduces key AI domains - including machine learning, natural language processing, intelligent tutoring systems, learning analytics, expert systems, computer vision, multimodal AI, and generative AI - and relates them to pedagogical and institutional objectives. The chapter highlights how AI can support personalized learning, immediate feedback, early identification of at-risk learners, accessibility, teacher productivity, and data-informed institutional decision-making. At the same time, it critically addresses challenges linked to algorithmic bias, privacy and surveillance, academic integrity, teacher readiness, digital inequality, reliability, and governance gaps. The chapter concludes with a phased, human-centered framework for AI integration that emphasizes pedagogical alignment, institutional readiness, ethical governance, capacity building, assessment redesign, stakeholder trust, and continuous improvement.
