- Abstract
This study investigates manufacturing upgrading’s impact on Chinese migrant workers’ formal rental housing choices, focusing on rising urban housing prices as a “push factor.” As traditional work dormitories decline, more migrant workers enter the rental market, making housing crucial for urban integration. Analysis of CMDS data through various models reveals that manufacturing upgrading promotes formal rental choices, though this effect is suppressed by rising housing prices. Upgrading drives up housing prices in inflow cities, consequently hindering migrant workers’ formal market access, a phenomenon termed a “masking effect.” The recommendation is for local governments to regulate rental prices concurrently with promoting industrial upgrading to ensure quality housing for migrant workers.
