- Abstract
This research is a systematic literature review of the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and City Information Modeling (CIM) to optimize construction efficiency and promote the development of intelligent cities. The review draws from international and domestic databases, such as Web of Science, Scopus, IEEE Xplore, and CNKI, using key terms including “BIM,” “CIM,” and “construction efficiency.” Research findings are presented to show that BIM significantly enhances construction performance through cost benefits, shorter project duration, and improved collaboration between stakeholders. CIM builds upon the same benefits through the integration of different sources of city data including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Internet of Things (IoT) sensor data onto unified 3D digital city models. This unification enhances coordination between discrete construction projects and the management of city-wide infrastructure more effectively and can accelerate planning approvals and make the entire process more efficient. A case study based in Guangzhou illustrates the practical benefits where city-wide CIM platforms based upon the usage of BIM information have enhanced city-wide management and governance. Challenges are however noted through the current review such as different technological platforms used, lack of industry standards, integration difficulties with different forms of data and cybersecurity threats as impediments to successful BIM-CIM adoption and utilization. In summary, the combination of BIM and CIM promises significant potential in enhancing the efficiency of construction and furthering the goals of intelligent city developments but actual realization will require careful empirical research through the establishment of standard data platforms and the use of new emerging technologies. Areas of future research should include the development of common standards, collection empirical data to quantitatively measure the impacts at the city level and the overcoming technological barriers to maximize the synergy value in the use of BIM-CIM in the construction industry in the city.
