- Abstract
Against the backdrop of fostering a new pattern for the Western Development Strategy, scientific collaborative innovation has become pivotal for integrating cross-regional resources and achieving high-quality development. Drawing on collaborative publication data from 131 western Chinese cities across 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024, this study employs multiple network analysis methods to examine the structural characteristics and evolutionary trends of scientific collaborative innovation networks. Findings reveal: network density has increased with small-world characteristics emerging; a multi-center collaborative pattern is gradually forming; structural dependence has shifted from administrative regions to cross-provincial linkage and multi-polar coordination; communities are evolving into cross-provincial clusters, though peripheral cities remain under-integrated; and the topological structure has transformed into a multi-center, high-density complex network. Conclusions indicate that the western region has established an efficient and resilient collaborative innovation network, with future efforts needed to strengthen peripheral city connections to enhance overall quality.
