- Abstract
Mining belt conveyors are employed globally within mining sites, conveying crushed materials from short to long distances. In this study, a compacted landfill, filling two natural thalwegs, was necessary to enable the implementation of a belt conveyor system. Therefore, estimating settlements in the landfill is crucial for validate the design and verify the conveyor structure. A 3D finite element numerical model was developed to more realistically and reliably evaluate the differential settlements in the embankment. Initially, the local geology was interpreted based on geological soundings available in the region and the three-dimensional geomechanical model developed in Leapfrog software, as well as the sequencing of the landfill. The shear strength and deformability parameters of the materials present in the model, including foundation and embankment, were determined based on the interpretation of triaxial laboratory tests, using the RSData software. With the three-dimensional model and strength parameters in hand, the model was assembled within the RS3 software to determine the stresses and strains at each stage of landfill construction. In addition to determining how the stresses in-creases in the foundations with the respective displacements, the differential settlements on the upper plateau were determined by the software. The 3D numerical model, in this case, was essential to obtain more realistic predic-tions of settlements and suggest changes to the foundation bases of the belt conveyors, minimizing possible problems related to settlements, still in de-sign phase.
