Abstract

The modern symbolic meaning of crows in Chinese culture differs considerably from the one in ancient times, which has been discussed in a number of papers. However, the image of crows didn’t turn from the primeval divine bird to the present-day sign of ominousness in a simple way, especially over the long period from the far ancient times to the Han Dynasties, when the bird cast both good and ill impressions in people’s minds. This paper aims to present a comprehensive review of the evolution of the image of crows in ancient China.
