Abstract

The diagnosis of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is primarily conducted through blood tests, which are typically accessed via Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) services. VCT involves a client-centred, two-way communication approach between counsellors and clients, aiming to prevent HIV transmission, provide emotional support, and disseminate information to People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), their families, and communities. This study aimed to investigate the influence of knowledge, attitudes, and practices concerning VCT clinic on the utilisation of VCT services among HIV/AIDS patients at the Kendari City Regional Hospital in 2022. A sample of 74 participants was drawn from a total population of 273 patients using a simple random sampling method. The analysis encompassed descriptive statistics (univariate), assessments of associations between variables (bivariate), and exploration of multiple predictors/outcomes (multivariable analysis). Significant associations were found between VCT clinic utilisation and (1) knowledge (p-value = 0.001), (2) attitude (p-value < 0.001), and (3) practice (p < 0.001) among PLWHA at Kendari City Hospital. These factors should be considered to inform policy decision-making, particularly to improve VCT services utilisation in regard to HIV prevention and control.
