Abstract

This study aims to determine the behaviour of indirect female sex workers towards the prevention of STIs, HIV and AIDS in entertainment venues in Kendari City with the type of qualitative research that refers to the Health Belief Model (HBM) theory. Data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and observations with phenomenological studies selected through snowball sampling of 6 informants namely FSWs and 2 triangulation informants namely health workers and security. The results showed that most of the female indirect sex workers (FSWs) realised that they belonged to a high-risk group. However, their knowledge of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV and AIDS is still lacking. On the other hand, their prevention practices against STIs, HIV and AIDS are quite good. Although they agree that condom use is an effective preventive measure, in practice, a small number of informants still do not use condoms during sexual intercourse. This is due to their low bargaining position when negotiating condom use with clients. Nevertheless, they recognised the benefits, such as being less prone to contracting STIs, HIV and AIDS and avoiding unwanted pregnancies. However, many FSWs clients are reluctant to use condoms on the grounds that it reduces satisfaction so that a small number of WPSTL said the obstacles in using condoms. To get information about STIs, HIV and AIDS, they utilise social media and health counselling as sources of knowledge.
