- Abstract
Gender equality is both a core value and a theoretical tenet of Western feminism. As feminist movements have evolved, the conceptualization of gender equality has undergone three significant shifts: from an initial sameness-based view of equality that ignored gender differences, to a difference-based view emphasizing gender distinctions, and further toward a perspective deconstructing the very significance of such differences. In the field of education, feminists have applied this unique gender-equality perspective to reveal gender inequalities embedded within school curricula, particularly in textbooks. They have critiqued the androcentric knowledge systems perpetuated by traditional educational materials and advocated for the development of a gender-equal curriculum. These efforts have not only profoundly influenced mainstream textbook culture in Western countries but also provide valuable experiences and insights for curriculum reform and textbook compilation in China.
