- Abstract
In the shipbuilding industry, subcontractors play a crucial role in the construction process because most types of work cannot be completed solely by the main contractor. Various specialized tasks require subcontractors with expertise in specific components while the new shipbuilding process is underway. Consequently, main contractors establish their own standards for evaluating subcontractor performance during project execution. Previous studies have generally focused only on subcontractor selection processes in shipyards. This paper fills that gap by examining the performance of subcontractors over a defined period while collaborating with the main contractor in the construction of a 26-meter tugboat. The performance assessment employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Evaluation forms were distributed to division heads within the main contractor’s organization, and the collected data were analyzed based on predetermined parameters. The objective of this study is to determine subcontractor performance during their engagement in the tugboat construction project, identify technical factors that influence monthly performance, and analyze whether subcontractor performance affects the overall construction process. The results of the eight-month performance assessment show scores ranging from 3.32 to 4.19, indicating performance levels from sufficient to very good, and meeting the standards set by the main contractor. Furthermore, the validity test results were declared valid with a product moment r-table threshold of 0.666, yielding values between 0.704 and 0.946. The reliability test also met the minimum Cronbach’s alpha coefficient requirement of 0.60 with a score of 0.940. This study provides a reference for shipyards to periodically assess subcontractor performance to ensure smooth and uninterrupted construction of 26-meter tugboats.
