- Abstract
Global green trade regulations are undergoing rapid restructuring, increasing the signaling importance of firms’ sustainable business capabilities. This study uses A-share listed companies in Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing from 2014 to 2024 to investigate the effect of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance on corporate export outcomes and the mediating and moderating role of green innovation. Empirical results indicate that ESG performance significantly promotes export expansion, with stronger effects observed in non-state-owned enterprises and in firms within non-heavily polluting industries. Green innovation functions both as a mediator and as a moderator. It transmits the impact of ESG performance to export performance and delineates the boundary conditions under which ESG performance yields diminishing marginal returns. This research extends the analysis of the economic consequences of ESG to the arena of international market competition, elucidating the dynamic process through which non-financial signals are converted into export competitiveness, and offering policy-relevant guidance for differentiated ESG policies and incentives for green technology.
