- Abstract
This study examines the effectiveness of an adaptive learning system (ALS) with formative feedback in improving undergraduates’ academic writing and their satisfaction in a required reading–writing course at a Thai public university. Using a single-group pretest–posttest design with 70 students, we combined objective tests of writing knowledge and analytic ratings of writing quality with a satisfaction survey and open-ended responses. After six weeks of ALS use, mean scores for total academic writing increased from 54.05 to 78.56 (p < .001, Cohen’s d = 1.35), with large gains in both writing knowledge and writing quality. Overall satisfaction with the ALS was high (M = 4.36/5), and qualitative comments highlighted the value of timely, specific feedback for clarifying errors, guiding revision, and supporting autonomy. The findings suggest that well-designed ALS configurations can complement instructor-led teaching by providing personalised practice and feedback that strengthen academic writing performance and learner engagement.
