Abstract

The development of information and communication technology (ICT) has transformed counseling services through cyber counseling innovations. This study aims to investigate: (1) global publication trends in cyber counseling indexed in Scopus from 2020 to 2025, (2) dominant research topics and patterns of institutional and country collaboration, and (3) existing research gaps in the field. Methods this research employs a quantitative approach combining bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review (SLR). A total of 508 Scopus-indexed articles were retrieved, containing bibliographic information such as titles, authors, affiliations, keywords, abstracts, citations, and references. Data were analyzed using VOSviewer, Microsoft Excel, and Biblioshiny for R, while the SLR followed PRISMA guidelines for qualitative assessment. Results Findings reveal that cyber counseling research is dominated by mental health topics during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a prevalence of online therapy and qualitative methodologies. The United States and the United Kingdom lead publications and collaborations, yet international cooperation remains limited. Significant gaps exist in the application of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and natural language processing, alongside insufficient attention to training, the digital divide, and ethical frameworks. Cyber counseling research has grown significantly, yet remains concentrated in developed countries and traditional thematic areas. Future studies should prioritize cross-country collaborations and integrate advanced digital technologies to support inclusive and effective online counseling practices.
