Abstract

This article presents a research design for exploring and conceptualizing mental health constructs among Sundanese elementary school students based on the indigenous philosophy of Tri Tangtu, which emphasizes harmony with God, with others, and with nature. Recognizing the cultural limitations of existing psychological assessment tools, the study aims to design a culturally grounded framework that inform the future development of a mental health measurement instrument. Employing a sequential exploratory mixed-methods approach, the design includes a qualitative phase involving ethnographic interviews and observations to uncover culturally embedded dimensions of mental well-being. These dimensions are expected to guide item development aligned with Sundanese values. The design also outlines procedures for expert validation, linguistic adaptation, and pilot testing to ensure developmental appropriateness. Although instrument construction has not yet been completed, this design anticipates the steps necessary for psychometric testing, including exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. By integrating local wisdom into the planning of culturally sensitive measurement tools, the study contributes to more inclusive and contextually relevant mental health research in Indonesian education. The resulting framework is intended to support future interventions, screenings, and educational practices rooted in cultural identity and psychological resilience.
