Abstract

This study presents a systematic literature review examining the effectiveness of group counselling interventions in reducing academic stress among university students. Emphasizing cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), the review synthesizes findings from 22 empirical studies published between 2010 and 2024. Results indicate that CBT-based group interventions significantly reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and negative thought patterns, while also enhancing positive emotions and problem-solving skills. Mindfulness-based and positive psychology interventions also demonstrate efficacy, offering holistic and resilience-focused approaches. Additionally, group counselling has been successfully applied to address specific academic problems, such as procrastination and burnout. Despite promising outcomes, the review identifies methodological limitations in current literature, including small sample sizes, non-randomized designs, and lack of cultural diversity and follow-up data. Online and mobile-based interventions emerge as accessible alternatives, though further validation is needed. The findings offer evidence-based insights for university counselling services and highlight critical areas for future research in student mental health interventions.
