Abstract

Resilience is a crucial protective factor enabling adolescents to cope with adversity and thrive in school settings. While resilience research has ex-panded globally, its specific factor structure among adolescents in collectivistic cultures, particularly Indonesia, remains underexplored. This study examined the underlying factor structure of resilience among Indonesian high school students to identify dominant dimensions that can inform culturally-sensitive, targeted in-terventions. A cross-sectional study involving 507 students from diverse Indone-sian high schools (SMA/SMK) was conducted through online survey. A cultur-ally-adapted 25-item Likert-scale instrument assessed cognitive, emotional, be-havioral, social, and spiritual resilience dimensions. Data were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) followed by Factor Analysis with six-factor extraction and Varimax rotation. Six factors explained 80.3% of total vari-ance, with the first factor—emotional resilience and self-regulation—accounting for 58.7% of variance, demonstrating clear dominance in the resilience structure. Secondary dimensions included future aspirations (7.2% variance), while social support and spirituality did not emerge as distinct factors. The dominant factor encompassed positive thinking despite adversity, emotional regulation, self-confidence, active problem-solving, and impulse control. Emotional resilience and self-regulation constitute the core of Indonesian adolescents’ resilience in school contexts. School-based mental health interventions should prioritize developing emotional regulation and cognitive reframing skills while considering cultural contexts that may influence help-seeking behaviors and social support utilization.
