Examining Empirical Evidence of the Role of Spirituality in Counseling: Integration, Issues, and Implications

- Abstract
Spirituality is more acknowledged as an important aspect of practice counseling, but its integration into practice Still faces conceptual and practical challenges. This article aims to examine proof of the empirical role of spirituality in counseling with a focus on three questions: (1) how an integrated spiritual approach in practice counseling; (2) what issues mainly appear in the implementation of spirituality in counseling; and (3) what impact intervention spiritually based on results counseling. This study systematically studies literature against 10 articles published in the 2014–2024 period, which was obtained from the Scopus, ERIC, and Google Scholar databases, using the keywords “spiritual counseling, “religion in therapy,” and “religious counseling. “ The studies reviewed cover quantitative and qualitative methods. The results of the review show that integration of spirituality ty is done through explicit strategies, the text of sacred text and prayer), curriculum training, and contextual approach based on culture and religion. The findings cover a lack of training professionals, dilemma ethics, and lack of institutional support. Meanwhile, spiritual interventions have an impact on the improvement efficacy of counselors, decline of anxiety, increased behavior, and effectiveness in context rehabilitation. Findings This implication is important for developing curriculum education counselors, training professionals, and strengthening multicultural-spiritual competence in inclusive and ethical counseling.
