Abstract

In the digital age, enhancing student competencies is hindered by a lack of soft skills and practical experience, necessitating a strategic response. Universitas Muhammadiyah Gorontalo (UMGO) addresses this issue with the New Student Character and Personality Development Program (Program Pengembangan Karakter dan Kepribadian Mahasiswa Baru, PPKKMB), a three-month residential initiative designed to develop both hard and soft skills among new students. This study evaluates the effectiveness of PPKKMB in fostering these competencies in 55 students who completed the program and had earned over 100 credits. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale. Results indicate that participants achieved an average soft skills score of 81.7%, with highest sub-indicators in communication (82.9%), time management (82.7%), personal effectiveness (82.5%), and flexibility (82.5%). The lowest score was in negotiation and collaboration (78.2%). For hard skills, the average score was 81.2%, with the highest scores in building professional networks (82.5%), information technology skills (82.5%), and work ethic (82.2%). In contrast, entrepreneurial spirit was the lowest at 78.4%. The assessment of strategies used to strengthen competencies was rated good for both hard (81.2%) and soft skills (81.7%). This study concludes that the PPKKMB program effectively enhances students’ competencies, providing a viable model for competency development in a residential setting to support progressive higher education.
