Abstract

Language anxiety is one of the psychological factors that can affect academic performance and the continuation of students’ studies. Resilience, or the ability to withstand and recover from pressure, also plays a crucial role in academic success. This research aims to develop a language anxiety and resilience test that can be used to reduce the dropout rate of new students in the English Education Program. One instrument with two sections: one for language anxiety and another for resilience were developed and tested. The validity of both instruments was assessed through correlation analysis of item scores with total scores, while reliability was determined using Cronbach’s Alpha. Results demonstrated high validity for the instrument, with Pearson correlation values significant at the 0.01 level for all items. The language anxiety instrument showed excellent reliability with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.749, while the resilience instrument exhibited even higher reliability with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.760. These findings indicate that both instruments possess strong psychometric properties, enabling accurate and consistent measurement of language anxiety and resilience in new students of English Education programs. The high validity and reliability of this instrument suggests their potential effectiveness in identifying pre-service teachers at risk of dropping out. Through this research, it is hoped that valid and reliable measurement tools can be identified to detect levels of language anxiety and resilience, so that appropriate interventions can be applied to enhance the sustainability of students’ studies.
