At the current stage, there is great uncertainty in international policies, which has greatly affected the stability of the international financial market, and the current international environment is changing. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the epidemic, and the Taiwan issue have all had an impact on the international economic situation. We hope to have a deeper discussion on the current situation. This is also the difference between this conference and previous conferences.

Under such background, the 8th International Conference on Financial Innovation and Economic Development (ICFIED 2023) was held in Zhengzhou, China, during January 13–15, 2023, (virtual form). ICFIED 2023 provided an academic platform for all the participants to understand academic development trends, broaden research ideas, strengthen academic research, and discussion and promoted the institutionalization and standardization of financial innovation and economic development through modern research.

The conference brought together about 120 participants, primarily from China and Malaysia but also from Pakistan, India, USA, and other countries. A three-day program of the conference was divided into three sessions, including keynote speeches, oral presentations, and academic tour. Each keynote speaker was given 30–40 min for keynote speeches, and every presenterwas given 10–15 min. Among them, Prof. Jinghan Chen from University of Macau, China, performed a keynote speech: The Development of ESG. ESG has attracted worldwide attention from various stakeholders, including sovereign government, NGOs, societies, industries, and academics in recent years. However, ESG adoption varies considerably across the world. In the transition to sustainable finance and ethical corporate operations, it is increasingly urgent for countries and firms to implement ESG in practice. Despite hot debates, there are many hurdles to incorporate country-level ESG considerations into decision-making as well as adoption at firm’s level. In the presentation, she introduced the difficulties for implementation of ESG and highlight some directions for future improvement. The insightful speeches of each keynote speakers triggered heated and interesting discussions and a good number of informal talks between all the participants.
