Relationship between Motivation and Anxiety in Foreign Language Learning among Undergraduate Students Majoring in Science and Engineering

- Abstract
This study aims to explore the relationship between foreign language learning motivation and anxiety, as well as the differences in these two variables across grades. It employs a questionnaire survey among 76 undergraduate students majoring in science and engineering. Results indicate a moderate negative association of learning motivation with English learning anxiety among science and engineering undergraduate students. Intrinsic interest motivation, information medium motivation, and overall motivation were negatively correlated with overall anxiety and all its dimensions. Regarding differences between students of different grades, only learning context motivation reveals significant differences, while other dimensions of motivation and all anxiety dimensions show no significant differences. Based on the survey results, this paper provides several suggestions to enhance students’ intrinsic motivation for English learning and reduce anxiety.
