The 2nd International Conference on Democracy and Social Transformation (ICON- DEMOST) is an annual event hosted by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences State Islamic University Walisongo, Indonesia. I need to say that we want ICON-DEMOST to become an event, where social, humanity and political scientists share and exchange research experiences in the social and political fields as well as humanity in a constantly changing context. However, this desire seemed too burdened for us because we had to consider many priorities, so in the end we decided to make it a biennial event, with a span of implementation between June-September. Although as biennially event we hope that this conference increasingly becoming the best arena in the development of human social science and politics, not only in Indonesia but also in the world.

This year’s international conference, we set the theme “The Uncertain Future of Democracy and Humanity in the Digitalized World” with nine sub-themes related. The selection of this topic is based on the idea that technological development is becoming a crucial issue within modern society in which people tend to experience alienation within the rapid social and political transformation. Democracy as a political system that ensures transparency, citizen participation, and human rights protection is nowunder threat. Having the fact that there is a growing tendency of using transactional politics to win political interests such as the use of money and identity in political processes, therefore, political analysts consider this situation as the regression of democracy.

We have received 100 abstracts submitted from various countries and universities in Indonesia. The abstracts and manuscripts underwent a rigorous double-blind review process, and we are pleased to announce the acceptance of 42 full papers for publication.

I personally and on behalf of the head of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences State Islamic University Walisongo would like to say thank you for the support from the head and management State Islamic University Walisongo and all partners, as well as the committee. We also apologize once any shortcomings in the management of this conference.
