Abstract

Teenagers are limited in interacting directly with their peers during the pandemic. This situation makes teenagers become lonely and use the internet more. Insomnia has also increased during the pandemic. This study aims to: (1) determine the direct influence of loneliness on the emergence of insomnia tendencies in adolescents in Makassar City during the pandemic; and 2) determine the contribution of internet addiction tendencies as a mediator of the influence of loneliness on the emergence of insomnia tendencies. Respondents in this study were adolescents aged 15-19 years, domiciled in Makassar City, and felt alienated from the surrounding environment or felt alone. This study used the purposive sampling technique and obtained a total of 331 respondents. The measuring instruments used are UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 (20 items, α = 0.824), Insomnia Severity Index (7 items, α = 0.997), and Internet Addiction Test (20 items, α = 0.895). Data were analyzed using a regression test with path analysis. The results showed that: (1) there was no direct effect of loneliness on the emergence of insomnia tendencies in adolescents in Makassar City during the pandemic; (2) there is a mediating effect of internet addiction tendencies on the influence of loneliness on the emergence of insomnia tendencies in adolescents in Makassar City during the pandemic. This study implies the importance of internet use management skills for adolescent during Pandemic.
