Proceedings of the International Conference on Qur'an and Hadith Studies (ICQHS 2017)

International Conference on Qur’an and Hadith Studies (ICONQUHAS) 2017 has taken place successfully on November 6-8, 2017 at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) Jakarta, Indonesia. The realization of the conference is coupled with the the 2nd Annual Meeting of the Indonesian Association of Qur’anic Studies (AIAT), and the Annual Meeting of the Indonesian Association of Hadith Studies (ASILHA). We have invited thirteen prominent scholars from Indonesia and abroad, and we are really grateful because we have eight of them confirmed to attend. The other five invited speakers have shown their interest and strong willingness to participate in it, yet at the same time they had already made commitment to attend other academic activities either in this country or elsewhere in Germany, Italy, America, and Australia.

The theme of the conference is “The Current Status and Development of the Qur’an and Hadith Studies: Sources, Discourse, and Practices.” The theme was chosen, based on consideration that the Qur’an and Hadith from generation to generation face both more established civilization, more educated audiences, and more complicated problems ranging from the split of personality, conflict with variations, destruction of environment, and many other problems. Scholars have been discussing these issues to provide answers, to maintain the relevance of Islam with the demand of age.

During the Opening Ceremony and the First Plenary Session which took place at Harun Nasution Auditorium, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta there were more than two hundred and fifty audiences participated in the event. They consisted of invited speakers, presenters, discussants, invited participants, lectures and students of Qur’an and Hadith Studies. The Second Plenary Session which took place at the Theater Room of the Faculty of Ushuluddin in the second day were attended by more than one hundred and fifty participants. The parallel sessions are held after the Plenary Sessions in the first and the second day and were divided into four parallel sessions in accordance with the assigned topics of the conference.

This conference is managed with a new management using EC, EasyChair, and way of writing papers, using direct and simple template academic writing guide with only maximally 3000 words. To our surprise we receive very positive response from scholars, and we received 85 papers. We invited at least Ph.D., holders in the field of Islamic studies in general and in Qur’anic and Hadith Studies in particulars, to review the submitted papers. Each paper was reviewed by two reviewers. Fifty six papers were accepted, and were presented at the conference. We requested the authors whose papers presented at the conference to revise their papers by considering the inputs and feedbacks proposed during the conference. Finally, fifty four presenters have revised their papers and resubmitted to the committee. The committee have checked the papers with turnitin and grammarly to avoid plagiarism. These are the papers that we submit to Atlantis Press for publication.

Our event is organized by the Department of Qur’anic Studies and Hadith Studies, Faculty of Ushuluddin, and LP2M, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. The event is also co-organized by AIAT, ASILHA, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, UIN Sultan Thaha Saefuddin, IAIN Salatiga, IPTIQ Jakarta, el-Bukhari Institute. Beside Atlantis Press, all papers accepted after adequate revisions will be published at one of the following journals’ partners: Jurnal Ushuluddin, Ilmu Ushuluddin, Mutawatir,Esensia, Wawasan, Quhas, Refleksi, and Nun.

We expect that this ICONQUHAS is not the only collaborative effort that we can work together this year. We have proposed to hold the next ICONQUHAS 2018 in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia.
