Abstract

The Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector plays a vital role in India’s growing economy, with increasing demand for packaged food and snacks. Kishlay Foods Pvt. Ltd., a well-known company in Northeast India, has been successful in this market but faces the persistent challenge of employee absenteeism. This study aims to understand the major causes, patterns, and policy implications of absenteeism within the organization. Using a descriptive research design, both primary and secondary data were collected from 152 employees, representing blue-collar and white-collar groups. Key variables studied include work stress, health issues, family responsibilities, work-life balance, and leave policies. Findings show that workload pressure, lack of managerial support, and dissatisfaction with leave policies are major contributors to absenteeism, particularly among blue-collar employees. Attendance record analysis revealed seasonal peaks, mainly in July, and a higher rate of unplanned and unpaid leaves. White-collar employees expressed better satisfaction with policies compared to blue-collar staff. The study recommends workload redistribution, stress-management programs, improved communication, and fair enforcement of leave policies. Overall, the research highlights the need for stronger employee support systems and transparent HR practices to reduce absenteeism, boost morale, and enhance productivity. The outcomes also provide practical insights for other FMCG organizations facing similar workforce challenges.
