Abstract

The home environment plays a vital role in shaping students’ learning outcomes, behavior, and overall development. It forms the primary social and psychological setting where individuals acquire values, attitudes, and motivation toward education. Recognizing its importance, the present study examined the influence of the home environment on the academic achievement of undergraduate students in Lakhimpur District, Assam. A total of 400 undergraduate students were selected through purposive sampling from rural and urban colleges. The Home Environment Scale (HES–SN) developed by Dr. Reena Sharma and Dr. Vibha Nigam was used to assess students’ perceptions of dimensions such as parental involvement, emotional support, control, protectiveness, reward, and nurturing behavior. Academic achievement was determined from students’ recent semester CGPA or percentage scores obtained from college records. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and Pearson’s product-moment correlation to explore the relationship between home environment and academic achievement. The results indicated that most students experienced a moderately favorable home environment and had an average level of academic achievement. A significant positive correlation was found between supportive aspects of the home environment—particularly parental encouragement, emotional balance, and nurturing behavior—and academic achievement. The study concludes that a conducive home atmosphere is a key determinant of students’ educational success and emphasizes the importance of parental involvement and emotional support. The findings suggest that educational programs should focus on enhancing family participation to improve students’ learning outcomes.
